A summary of what the NBA is doing to drive user engagement

A recent article in the NYTimes goes into how the NBA is increasing engagement with its fans this year.  I hope to gather such cases to highlight the various strategies employed to drive online engagement. It is a short article and I encourage you to read it here.  The main points are:

Key Stats

  • NBA TV now available in 45 Million homes
  • Fan night voting up 239% from last season
  • Over 100,000 votes cast for each game
  • Online video viewership up 50% over last year
  • 215 Million streams worldwide YTD
  • More than 100 NBA related apps available for the Iphone, Android and Blackberry platforms

Main Strategy

  • A mutliplatform content distribution strategy - increasing TV distribution, greater availability of content online and use of tons of mobile apps.
  • Creating avenues for fans to interact online - like Fan night voting to pick featured game
  • Launch dedicated apps for streaming video, real-time scores and team specific stats.
