Over the past couple of weeks, I decided to dip my toe into the blogging world. After some research, I decided to use Wordpress. Seems like an elegant platform with lots of themes and support from the user community. I was intimidated by the complexity of other systems, notably Expression Engine.
This was because, I had a very rudimentary knowledge of programming languages like PHP, CSS , HTML or anything else required to implement these things. However, after dabbling with Wordpress for awhile, I found myself coming up to speed rather quickly with CSS, HTML and even PHP.
However, I was at times frustrated with the lack of flexibility of the platform. It seemed that very simple tasks or design requirements needed some sort of custom php to make it work, if a plugin does not exist. Then you can very quickly also gunk up your install with loads of plugins to enable features missing from the standard install. So after feeling a bit, adventurous, I decided to take a second look at Expression Engine. Talk about diving into the deep end after 1 day of swimming practice! But I was very quickly surprised by the sheer flexibility and ease with which I could accomplish things that, in the Wordpress world, would have required some heavy lifting. So, this is a set of articles to discuss each stage of my Expression Engine foray. Hopefully It will be of some use to someone. Keep watching this space.
